Upcoming Album of the Week (Ending September 29, 2018)

St. Vincent released a second alternate version of "Slow Disco," one of the tracks from Masseduction. The new version is titled "Slow Slow Disco." Maybe we'll get an entire album of reworks of the song, I wouldn't be against it. If that happens, check it out over at my Upcoming Releases page!

Almost 50 years ago, The Beatles released their ninth album. It was technically self-titled, but became known as The White Album. The 50th anniversary reissue edition of the album was announced last week.

roughtrade.com

As with most anniversary reissues, the release will mostly consist of new mixes of the original tracks, along with demo versions the tracks, along with a plethora of other session outtakes.

The 50th anniversary edition of The Beatles' White Album will be released on November 9.

Essential Full-Length Releases

Eleanor Friedberger - Rebound

Fiery Furnaces may have gone on hiatus in 2011, but Eleanor Friedberger has been going strong in her solo career. Rebound is her fourth solo record, following 2016's New View. Fiery Furnaces' seminal Blueberry Boat also got reissued this year!

FAN - Barton’s Den

Upcoming Album of the Week (Ending September 8, 2018)

One of the unfortunate aspects of hip hop culture is the expectation of rivalry between artists, and the frequent delivery on that expectation. A long-brewing rivalry between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B came to a head last night with Cardi attacking Nicki at a Fashion Week event and then being kicked out of the event. Maybe they'll patch things up some day, but for now, I'm awaiting the inevitable barrage of diss tracks between the rappers.

Better things have happened in the music world recently, including a lot of new album announcements. One in particular that I am looking forward to is the upcoming posthumous album from soul man Charles Bradley, Black Velvet.

treblezine.com

Though he had a long performing career, Bradley had a late age surge in popularity and released his first album, No Time for Dreaming, at age 62. He would release two more albums before his death last year.

His latest, and reportedly final, album was announced on September 6. It collects session recordings from all three of his records. The first single and video, "I Feel a Change," was also released.

Black Velvet is set for release on November.

Janelle Monáe - Dirty Computer

Monáe steps away a bit from the thematic elements of her first two albums, though there's still some Cindi Mayweather around. In ways, it's a more typical pop album, but one only this artist could make. It's sexual, defiant, political, and (as she always is) amazing!
