Upcoming Album of the Week (Ending January 26, 2019)

A friend of mine recently joked that a Las Vegas residency signaled the end of an artist's career. At only one album into her career, it's been reported that Cardi B will be getting her own residency later this year. Hopefully this is not the end of hers, but we'll have to wait for a follow-up record to find out for sure. Keep an eye on my Upcoming Releases page if she announces a new record to defy the odds.

This week, Stephen Malkmus announced a follow-up to his May 2018 album (with The Jicks), Sparkle Hard, with Groove Denied.

Malkmus is perhaps best known for the 1990s indie rock band Pavement. Following the end of that band, he started Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, which has a similar sound, though maybe with a "dad rock" bent.

His newest record promises to be a significant departure from his past work; it is apparently an electronica record. The album was long teased and had been worked on for over a decade, but was initially rejected by his label.

The label eventually came around on the record, and it was announced this week along with the lead single "Viktor Borgia." My favorite take on the song came from a comment on You-Tube (from user Kevin Archanjo), that it heralded the birth of "dad electronica."

Groove Denied is scheduled for release on March 15.
